Don’t forget to make plans for your pets in case of a hurricane! Early preparedness for your pet is just as important as any other plans you may be making, so read our hurricane tips for pets to make sure you have everything ready for them. Remember that in an evacuation zone, most public shelters do not allow pets.
Check with your local Humane Society, or other local government agency, since some areas are now allowing you to pre-register for newly established pet shelters. Keep in mind, that these new shelters will usually only accept pre-registered pets located in evacuation areas and will not accept non-registered pets at the last minute.
Make arrangements, BEFORE hurricane season with your local kennel, or with friends who live outside the evacuation area. Leaving your dog, cat or other pet alone to fend for themselves, is just setting you and your pet up for a disasterous ending. When you stock up hurricane supplies for yourself and your family, be sure to include your pet(s). Have enough food, water and medicine put aside in your hurricane supplies for your pet.
An important note - Make sure you visit the veterinarian before the start of hurricane season and keep a copy of vaccination records, along with a recent photo, in with your other valuable papers to be taken with you. You should also be sure to have identification tags on your pet with your contact information, in the event you are separated.
